Step 2: Cutting Sewing Pattern

After downloading your pattern, print it out and gather your materials. You will need body fabric, trim fabric, fabric scissors, paper scissors for the pattern, and weights to hold the pattern down on the fabric. Before you start cutting, make sure to measure yourself to ensure you cut out the correct size. All measurements are provided in the pattern instructions.

Now, let’s cut out the pieces! Start by cutting the back on the fold. Mark your notches clearly since they’ll help you align everything later. After that, cut out the front piece and the sleeves. Remember to cut four pieces for the pockets. Make sure to mark all necessary notches as you cut.

Step 3: Sewing Shoulder Seams

With all your pieces cut, it’s time to start sewing! Begin by sewing the shoulder seams together for both the front and back pieces. Make sure to press the seams open and then fold the front piece in half to press along its length. This will help create a nice finish for your kimono.

Next, align the center back with the center back notch and pin them together right sides facing. Don’t forget to match the front notch as well. Sew everything using a half-inch seam allowance and finish the edges to prevent fraying.

Step 4: Adding Pockets to Kimono

Now it’s time to add the pockets! Pin all four pocket pieces to the side seams of the front and back pieces, ensuring the notches align properly. Sew the pocket pieces at a half-inch seam allowance. After sewing, finish the edges for all four pocket pieces before moving on to the side seams.

Step 5: Attaching Kimono Sleeve

Next, we’ll attach the sleeves. When pinning the sleeves, make sure to pin at the notches—two notches for the back and one for the front. After pinning, take it to the sewing machine and sew with a half-inch seam allowance.

Once done, press the armhole seam towards the sleeve hem. This creates a clean and neat finish.

Step 6: Sewing Sleeve Piecing

For the sleeve piecing, sew the bottom sleeve pieces together right sides facing. After sewing, press the seams open, just like we did for the front piece. Fold and press the sleeve piecing to prepare it for attachment.

Now, attach the sleeve piecing to the bottom of the sleeve, ensuring the seams match up. Pin it together and take it to the sewing machine to sew. After sewing, finish the edges and press the seams again.

Step 7: Hemming Kimono Edges

Once your kimono is assembled, it’s time to hem the edges. Trim any excess fabric to ensure everything is even. Fold the hem at half an inch and press, then fold again for a clean finish and press once more.

Now, sew the hem approximately a quarter inch from the edge. Make sure to check that you’re catching the hem on the opposite side as you sew. This will ensure a neat finish on your DIY kimono!
