Step 1: Download and Prepare Your Pattern

Step 2: Adjust the Length of the Kimono

Make sure your kimono has sleeves by extending them by 14 inches, for a gathered fit with the zipper closure and add a 13 inches to the body length since this kimono is longer than the original design pattern.Finally to determine the length you desire for your kimono measure from your back neck down, to where you want it to end.

Step 3: Create the Patch Pockets

We will switch from using the side seam pockets to patch pockets of them for a new look and functionality, in the design process. Sketch out the outline of the patch pocket. Neatly fold it over to create the hem for the pocket area. Ensure that the pocket hem measures half an inch when folded neatly; take your fabric and cut one inch initially before folding it and trimming it accordingly to ensure everything sits smoothly in place.

Before stitching the edges, on the sides of the garment piece with pockets attached to it in place; we must first complete the pocket details by pressing the fabric, along the hemline to create a neat finish – starting with a one inch fold followed by an additional half inch fold before securing them in place with stitches running down each side of the pocket fabric piece.

Make sure your sewing machine is set to the stitch setting and stitch two lines along the edges of the sleeves; one, at 1⁄the other, at 1⁄inch intervals Pull the threads gently to gather the fabric until it matches the length of the zipper for a fit.

Step 11: Attach the Zipper

Now that the gathers are all set up nicely in position it’s time to secure the zipper in place. Attach the zipper tape to the gathered edge of the sleeve making sure it lines up smoothly with the bias tape. Carefully stitch the zipper into position ensuring that everything looks neat and tidy.

Step 12: Sew the Sleeves to the Body

Now carefully align all the edges. Join the sleeves to the part of the kimono using a 1 inch seam allowance while being cautious, around the zipper section to prevent any needle damage.
